Choosing One Algorithm Strategy over Another (Canada/US) – $3000
This paper reviews the (Canada/US) the importance of various factors leading the buy-side to choose one algorithm provider over another for the same types of algorithm strategies. The factors are Reliability, Performance, Price, Degree of Customization, Reputation and a Non-trading Relationship. Two factors are identified as leading over all others. APRIL 2012:
Broker Consolidation and Commission Allocation in Canada – $3000
Broker consolidation has been a long discussed ‘trend’ among market participants. While we do see many of the smaller US and Canadian firms reducing their tiers – it is not a commonplace activity among buyside constituents that require capital. Interestingly, co-dependency has a significant impact on the actions of these larger firms and as a result, many things will be slow to change in the small, illiquid market that is Canada. This topic will be further explored and the paper released in April.
JUNE 2012
Dodd-Frank and Southbound Trading – Will Canada get a free pass? – $3000
In a word, “no”. Any institutional investor who is trading OTC needs to be aware of the consequences of the rules. For example, Fixed margining, Initial margin requirement, Collateral requirements, Common credit and Trade portability. Given the fact that mandatory clearing is not yet a reality for the world in the OTC market, investors have time to institute the necessary risk measures and be certain they understand their portfolio liquidity and several other factors to be compliant when trading in the U.S. in the near future. This paper will examine Dodd-Frank (in so far as you can evaluate 1000 page document) and illustrate the key issues for the buy-side investment managers in Canada.
AUGUST 2012
HFTs – Are they truly moving out of the markets or are they on vacation? – $3000
We would argue that HFTs are not going anywhere. And, in fact, according to our research, have yet to make a significant departure from Canada. This paper will examine the past, present and our anticipated future of HFTs.
